A throwing knife is usually one-piece, unlike the traditional knife that has a handle which is manufactured separately from the blade. Throwing knives are designed this way in order to create a durable knife with a balanced distribution and weight. Although some throwing knives are double-edged, the edges themselves tend to be dull, since the sharpened point of a throwing knife is what penetrates the target. If the edges were sharpened, the person throwing the knife would risk cutting himself or herself during the throw.
